An old Quaker community
Capel had an active Quaker community from the seventeenth into the eighteenth century, and a Meeting House built for them in 1724 still stands in the village. The parish church of St John the Baptist dates from the thirteenth century, though it was enlarged and restored during the nineteenth.
From hillfort to brickworks
Anstiebury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort covering around five hectares, is a scheduled ancient monument within the parish near Coldharbour, while more recently the Clock House Brick Company operated in Capel for decades before closing. Woodland towards the Greensand Ridge borders the parish on its northern edge, part of the transition out of the Weald.
